Name: Jessica Derham
Jess Derham has over 15 years experience working in Higher Education, teaching Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management. She is very passionate about the tourism industry and empowering her students through industry engagement and authentic learning opportunities. She is currently a Tourism Lecturer at William Angliss Institute, where she draws on her leadership, research, and technology skills to support the delivery of degrees which meet industry needs and inspires the leaders of the future.
Prior to joining William Angliss, Jess held a variety of teaching roles at La Trobe University, La Trobe College Australia, as well as teaching Internationally at the Singapore Institute of Management. She has received several teaching awards, including most recently being nominated by her peers for a Teaching Excellence Award for her innovations through 2020 and responding to Covid19. This included introducing new Technology to the Institute to enhance student learning and engagement, whilst supporting staff with the transition to Online Delivery.
Jess holds a Master of Business and Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Tourism Management from La Trobe University and was the recipient of both the Dean’s Medal for the most Outstanding Graduating Tourism Student and a Faculty Honours Scholarship. She also holds an Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management from William Angliss Institute, where she received an award for the Most Outstanding Marketing Student.
Jess was a former Chair of the Young Tourism Network (YTN) and is a current Board Member of the Bayside Tourism Network. Whilst on the YTN Committee, Jess was part of the team which wrote the Victorian Tourism Award winning submission for the ‘Outstanding Contribution of Volunteers’ in 2017. Most recently, she was also part of the very proud teaching team, supporting her student from William Angliss Institute, for their award-winning visitor economy business idea to the VTIC Student Entrepreneurial Award (2021), focusing on the Accessible Tourism Market.
This is Jess’s first time as a judge, and she feels very privileged to be involved and to support the growth of the Victorian Tourism Industry.
