Melbourne Museum is a unique tourist attraction that showcases Australian social history, Indigenous cultures, science and technology and the environment. Located adjacent to the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building, and home to IMAX Theatre Melbourne, the museum plays a vital tourism role for the state. Of the 1,428,238 visitors who visited in 2010/11, 38% were from regional, interstate and international markets. In 2010/11 a number of achievements cemented Melbourne Museum's position as one of the world’s great museums. Highlights were the presentation of two international blockbuster exhibitions that came exclusively to Melbourne; Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition and Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs.
